My biography

Luis Fabiano was born in Campinas in Brazil on 8 November 1980. He began his career at his home-town club of Ponte Preta where he scored 25 goals in 67 appearances.

This alerted giants São Paulo FC to his talents and after 10 goals in 22 matches in the Brazilian Serie A he earned a move to European football, when he was transferred to French club Rennes. The move, however, was unsuccessful and Luis Fabiano returned to São Paulo after failing to score in 11 matches.

Back in his native Brazil Luis Fabiano blossomed and scored 19 goals in just 23 matches in his first season. He bettered that tally the following term, notching 29 goals in 34 matches. After an impressive start to the 2004 season, when he scored five goals in eight matches, Luis Fabiano returned to Europe, this time joining Portuguese giants FC Porto, who paid €10m for his services.

Top scorer in the Copa Libertadores
His total of 118 goals in 160 competitive matches for São Paulo remains the best strike ratio in the club’s history. His reputation was further enhanced when he finished as top scorer in the 2004 Copa Libertadores.

However, his stay in Portugal did not live up to expectations and after just three goals in 22 matches he was transferred to Sevilla in Spain. The one highlight of his time at Porto was a victory in the Intercontinental Cup, when the Portuguese outfit beat Colombian side Once Caldas.

The UEFA Cup
At Sevilla, after a slow start, Luis Fabiano finally started to live up to expectations. In 2006 he helped the Andalucian club to win the UEFA Cup, scoring one of the goals in a 4-0 triumph over Middlesbrough. And he helped them to repeat the feat the following season, when Sevilla retained their crown by defeating fellow Spanish side Espanyol on penalties.

In 2007, Luis Fabiano was part of the team that lifted the Spanish Cup after defeating Getafe, and the following season he finished second in the Primera Division goalscoring charts.

Often uncompromising in his style, during his São Paulo years he picked up a number of red cards, but has put his early reputation for hotheadedness behind him. Luis Fabiano combines strength and a nose for goal with typically Brazilian flair. He is equally adept with both feet and strong in the air.
